SPRINGFIELD          Barbara J. (Mattoon) Cowdrey, 77, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026 at Baystate Medical Center. She was born on March 29, 1949 in Springfield and was the daughter of the late Raymond Mattoon and June (Crosier) Mattoon Guindon. Barbara was an assistant teacher at Dee Dee’s Day Care and a cook at the former Oak Manor Nursing Home. Barbara had the kindest heart, gentlest soul and was full of joy. She made the best chocolate chip cookies and macaroni salad. Barbara will be missed by all of her family.

Besides her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Cowdrey, Sr. and five of her siblings

She is survived by a son, Robert W. Cowdrey, Jr. and his fiancé, Jennifer Goodine of Fort Fairfield, ME, daughter, Kellie Thornton and her fiancé, David Heywood of Chicopee, son, Joshua J. Cowdrey of Springfield and son-in-law, Jason Thornton of Springfield; ten siblings, Linda, Donna, Patricia, Michael, Suzanne, Raymond, John, Edward, Doreen and Joanne; five grandchildren, Jessica Thornton, Adrian Thornton and husband, Charles  Lyman, Jason Thornton, Jr., Shaughnessy Thornton, Joshua Thornton and fiancé, Bethzaida Rivera; six great grandchildren, Sevinah Jean, Cornell, Janaiya, Cairo, J’Amiracle and Janaiyla and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours for Barbara are on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at the Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home on 69 East St. in Chicopee from 2 to 4 pm followed by a funeral home service at 4 pm.
