JOHN E. CANAVAN

1947 – 2023

CHICOPEE    John E. Canavan, 75, of Chicopee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at home with his family by his side. Born December 12, 1947, in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Emmet and Margaret (Turley) Canavan. John was an Air Force veteran, stationed at Westover Air Force Base, then continued his service as a police officer for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a former member of St. Patrick’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. John enjoyed travel, the beach, games, baseball, and his hobbies of building model railroads and collecting Winross trucks. His simple way of life, fun-loving spirit, and love for his family, especially his grandchildren will be deeply missed. John is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Dorothy E. “Dotty” (Fiore) Canavan; three children, Tara Jeane Tifft and her husband, Robert (Liverpool, NY); Kristine Canavan (Wayland, MA); Craig Canavan and his wife, Maryanne (Lagrangeville, NY); and his seven grandchildren, Connor, Colleen, and Margaret Tifft, William and Joseph Burke, and Ruby and Hazel Canavan. Services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home (69 East St. Chicopee, MA) at 10:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church (395 Chestnut St. Springfield, MA) at 11:30 am with burial in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery (1390 Main St. Agawam, MA) at 1:00 pm. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2023, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
