Sophie J. (Walas) Kalita, 90, of Chicopee, died on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Willimansett Center East. She was a retired bookkeeper for New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Springfield. Sophie was born on May 15, 1929 in Chicopee and was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary (Nendza) Walas. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and a member of the Polish Junior League. She is survived by her daughter, Lin Murphy, son-in-law, Attorney John J. Murphy, Jr. of Chicopee and her sister, Stelle Hubach of West Springfield. Sophie is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Emil T. Kalita; four brothers, Joseph, Walter, Stanley and Max Walas and four sisters, Catherine Nadeau, Sally Lesniak, Joyce Cawthra and Helen Walas. She is also pre-deceased by her favorite niece, Kimberly Hubach. Family and friends are invited to attend a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chicopee on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 11am. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
